CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

The weeks following Christmas Rain and Khari spent avoiding each other unless they were taking turns with Jeremiah. They didn’t even utter any words to one another. They weren’t yet ready to talk about the kiss. Even though it was only small, it still wasn’t supposed to happen. Rain thought she was doing the right thing by kissing Khari with hopes to pull him back in, but she had only pushed him away. She kicked herself for doing that. She enjoyed the kiss but knew that Khari wasn’t feeling it. She had wanted to pick up the phone plenty of times to call and apologize, but something always told her to put the phone down because no matter what she couldn’t take back what she had done.

Khari was forced to walk around feeling guilty because Mia was just in the other room when Rain kissed him. What if she would have walked in and caught them? Just the thought of that made Khari cringed inside and thank the Heavens for it not playing out that way. He couldn’t help but to think about how soft Rain’s lips still felt, the lips that he loved kissing when they were together.

“Khari, you aren’t here right now, so tell me what’s wrong.” Mia said to him as they sat at the table eating dinner.

She looked up from her plate and put the fork down.

“Huh? Oh, it’s nothing, baby I was just thinking about something that happened at work. I’m here though.”

“Then what did I say if you’re here? You aren’t listening to a word I’m saying, Khari.” She pouted.

“Just repeat what you said, baby. You have all my attention.”

“I said, I can’t believe Jas is getting married and to Joseph at that. Just a few months ago she was telling us how she wasn’t ready to fall in love and be somebody’s wife, but now she is. I’m happy for her and can’t wait to be her maid of honor. I don’t know but helping Jas plan her wedding is making me feel ready to be married.” She hinted to him as she waited for his answer.

Khari felt that when the day came to pop the question, he would. They had already been together for three years so what was the wait? He knew it was coming soon because they both were ready. He was just waiting for the right time. Since Rain came in the picture again he had gotten side tracked, and their relationship had become rocky, but now everything was back cool between them.

“Mia, I promised you I was going to make you my wife, and I meant it. When it happens, because it is, I just want you to be patient. The title of my Mrs. is yours.”

He reached across the table and grabbed her hand.

“You know my mama wants us to get married, and she also been talking about grandkids again. I want things to be right between us. I feel we won’t be complete until we get this show going.
